Loki Update!

Thanks to Jo Anne, Loki
(white-crowned
sparrow) has made a full recovery! |

August 15, 2006
Wild Heart Ranch is happy to report that Loki has finally made a full
recovery and has now been released back into the wild with a flock of other
white-crowned sparrows. Due to the fact that Loki is now a free bird, we will no
longer be able to keep track of how he is doing. Although the experience is
over, Wild Heart Ranch continues to be proud and grateful that we could play
such a large role in Loki’s recovery.

According to the Wildlife Rescue Association of BC, Loki has been moved to
the aviary now and continues to flourish in his new environment. We have been
told that he will be released back in to the wild when his feathers are
one-hundred percent waterproof. Loki is up for review soon, so it may only be a
matter of days before they release him. We wish our tiny bird the best of luck!

As of today, Loki is thriving in his new environment at the Wildlife Rescue
Association of BC. The most exciting piece of news we have to report is that
Loki is now able to eat on his own. It is this ability to self-feed, that has
enabled him to gain more weight and become healthier. Another result of his
continued growth is that Loki is being moved to an aviary where he can interact
with other birds and learn to fly. It seems like our baby bird is no longer so!

On this beautiful summer day of July, everyone here at Wild Heart Ranch can’t
help but feel a tinge of sadness as our baby bird Loki has now left us. Under
the amazing care of Joanne, within the past two weeks, Loki has become strong
enough to experiment with flying and can now propel himself about a half a meter
into the air! Needless to say, our beloved bird had reached the point where he
needed the special care of professionals to develop his flying ability. It was
hard to say goodbye to Loki, as he had filled our office with so much excitement
and love, but everyone knew we had taken him as far as we could. As of today,
Loki resides at a nearby Wildlife Rescue Association and we plan on following
his progress to make sure our special bird grows to his full potential.
Once again, all credit must go to Joanne for Loki’s recovery. She was an
unbelievable mother to Loki; making sure to feed him every half hour and
consistently ensuring his safety. Through her incredible compassion and
kindness, Joanne has truly embraced a long running belief of Wild Heart Ranch
which is, “What is wild in nature, is what calls to our hearts.” Loki has had a
profound impact on our company and we will continue to look back on his presence
as a wonderful time at our business.
Even though Loki is gone, we will continue to post updates on his progress via
the Wildlife Rescue Association. If you want to know what kind of bird Loki
turns out to and how his flying advances, then keep checking in with our

Wild Heart Ranch is happy to
report that in only six days time, Loki has gone from being a weak new born baby
bird, to a rambunctious and determined little creature. He is proudly showing
off his strength by venturing outside of his box and flapping his wings
constantly. We believe it is only a matter of time before Loki starts to fly;
soon he will have out grown his home in Jo Anne’s desk drawer!
Shortly he will be able to fly away and be the bird he was meant to be before
whatever fateful accident brought him our way!

July 6th, 2006
On the afternoon of July 6, 2006, in the Delta
B.C. office, Jo Anne Battad was enjoying a sunny day outside, when she noticed
something little and dark moving out of the corner of her eye. Upon taking a
closer look, Jo Anne realized that she had stumbled across a baby bird that had
fallen out of its nest!
Being the kind person that she is, Jo Anne immediately brought the baby bird
inside and gave it a home. Once the bird had settled into its new found home,
another employee, Jeremy Green, suggested that the baby bird would need some
food in order to maintain its strength. So with only a fork in hand, Jeremy went
outside to see what he could find for food. Looking back on the experience, he
reflects, “I went from being the ‘computer graphics guy’ to the ‘guy who uses a
fork to dig for worms for a baby bird.’ (Laughs) I searched and searched and
eventually, I found a little centipede. Jeremy called the local SPCA and was
instructed on basic care for the bird.
Tired and hurt from the fall, the baby bird eventually managed to eat the
centipede I fed him. Jo Anne took him home and has been so good with the little
bird’s expedient recovery. Give the little bird credit, he is definitely a
survivor and I am amazed how he is growing in strength everyday.”
Loki was very weak when Jo Anne found her. |
Just five days later, the baby bird now named “Loki”, has survived and more
importantly, has been recovering exceptionally well. His care-taker Jo Anne,
explains that, “He has been eating and sleeping a lot, and as a result has
become stronger and grown more feathers.” All around the office there has been
speculation as to what type of bird Loki is and after doing some research it
looks like he might be a Robin. However, a mutual feeling is shared here at Wild
Heart Ranch which is best explained by Jo Anne who states, “Whatever kind of
bird he turns out to be, it doesn’t matter to any of us. He has already given us
so much joy and we are all grateful for having him here.”
